5 Days Mt. Kenya Trekking Safari

A Kenya Safari 

Tour description.

Mount Kenya is Africa’s second highest mountain at 5,199m (17,058 feet) and the highest of all Kenya Mountains. Mount Kenya is roughly circular, about 60km across at the 200mm contour, where the steep font hills rise out of the gentler slopes of the centered highlands. At the centre of the massif, the main peaks rise sharply from around 4,500m to the main summit of Batian 5,199m, Nelion 5,188m and point Lenana 4,985m. Other major summits on the mountain include Point Piggott 4,957m, Point Dutton 4,885 and Point John 4,883m. Of the three main peaks (Batian, Lenana and Nelion), only point Lenana can be reached by trekkers and the other two being only for technical climbers.

Day 1: NAIROBI/SIRIMON/ JUDMAIER CAMP (OLD MOSES CAMP) 3-4 HRS, 9KM, 860M ASCENT
Leave Nairobi at 8.00am to Nanyuki town for lunch, taking about 4 hours. After lunch, proceed to Sirimon Gate taking about 1 hr at an altitude of 2650m. From the gate follow the road as it winds uphill though the forest which becomes heathland after about 3 hrs. After the 3½ hours hike from the gate the road veers right to Judmaier/Old Moses Camp 9 kms. for dinner and overnight ( 3300m.)

Day 2: JUDMIER CAMP/SHIPTON CAMP 6-7HRS, 14KM, 900M ASCENT:
After breakfast, follow the track uphill, forking right at the junction. After one hour from Old Moses Camp, the track crosses Ontulili River. Go right contouring through the Moorland and crossing Likii North river and continue uphill to to of the ridge facing the Mackinders Valley from where there are panoramic views up the valley towards the main peaks. Proceed up in the valley to Shipton Camp (14 kms.) for dinner and overnight at 4200m.

Day 3:SHIPTON CAMP:
Spend the day for acclimatizing. Walk to Hauseberg col 4600m. around Kami Hut and if you have extra energy to proceed, you will walk down to Hauseberg Lakes (Hauseberg Tarn and Nanyuki Tarn). Walk back to Shipton for lunch, dinner and overnight

Day 4: SHIPTONS/POINT LENANA/MERU MOUNT KENYA BANDAS (CHOGORIA GATE) 11-12HRS, 26KM 785M ASCENT
Leave Shipton at 3am and ascend up a steep stony quarry that cuts through a cliff clearing
visible part towards lower Harris Tarns arriving Mount Kenya point Lenana 4,985m. for sunrise and then start the descent to Mintos hut 4,200m (4kms) for breakfast and a panoramic view of the Gorge’s valley ( 2hrs.) and then continue down for 19km, 5-6hrs to Meru Mt. Kenya Bandas, 2,950m, for dinner and overnight

Day 5: CHOGORIA/NAIROBI.
After breakfast, set in the morning journey to Chogoria village(32km). Hike for 2 hrs to connect the transfer vehicle to Chogoria village and later drive back to Nairobi.
All inclusive package:
Private transfers from Nairobi to Nanyuki and from Chogoria back to Nairobi.
